While the idea of using the 14th Amendment to keep Trump out of the White House has been bandied about by lawyers and political figures, the Colorado action is the first lawsuit demanding that a state disqualify Trump from the ballot, CREW said. The group chose Colorado because the laws there make it easier to get it before a court, he says. Some members of Congress, most recently Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California, have suggested the 14th Amendment might apply to Trump. Critics of the movement to disqualify Trump say the 14th Amendment clause was written to apply to former Confederates and should not be used against contemporary would-be candidates. Still, those who want to use the 14th Amendment to disqualify Trump face significant legal hurdles, experts say, adding that the matter is likely to end up in the Supreme Court if the movement gains steam.

"In 2024, the House will be won or lost in blue states," Congressional Leadership Fund president Dan Conston, wrote in the Aug, 7 memo addressed to "Interested Parties." This is the challenge facing House Republicans, wrote Conston. "These blue states exist in a vacuum outside of the competitive presidential and senate races ... meaning we must create our own infrastructure." All of those flipped New York seats are 2024 targets of the campaign arm for House Democrats, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. The Democratic rival House Majority PAC has said they are investing $45 million in New York and $35 million in California.

Hung Cao, a former GOP House nominee, is now running for Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine's seat. He warned in a recent interview that "witchcraft" is happening in California. "There's a place in Monterey, California called 'Lover's Point,'" Cao said. According to the Monterey County Historical Society, "Lover's Point" was indeed once known as "Lovers of Jesus Point," owing to its settlement by the Methodist Episcopalian Church in the 1870s. Earlier in the interview, Cao — a Vietnamese refugee — also remarked that he was African-American by virtue of having spent time in Niger as a child.

As a result of these unexpected swells, Morgan Stanley now projects 1.9% GDP growth for the first half of this year. Morgan Stanley's revision came at a pivotal time for the Biden White House. "Together we are transforming the country, not just through jobs, not just through manufacturing, but also by rebuilding our infrastructure," Biden said Thursday during a visit to a Philadelphia shipyard. The White House has dubbed this brick-and-mortar economic growth formula "Bidenomics," a phrase originally used by Republicans to jab the president, who co-opted the term as a badge of honor. "This report confirms what we've long said: Our strong and resilient economy is Bidenomics in action," White House assistant press secretary Mike Kikukawa said in an email to CNBC.

Michigan Rep. John James endorsed former President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign on Tuesday. James said at the time that Trump "can't be trusted" and is "not fit to lead." When Trump seemingly called for the "termination" of the US Constitution in December, James condemned Trump in stark terms. "A man who would suspend the Constitution can't be trusted," James said at the time, according to local Michigan news outlet WLNS. Unlike many of the Republicans who have already backed Trump's campaign, James represents a swing district, and is likely to face a tough challenge from Democrats next year.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said Tuesday he does not know if former President Donald Trump is the "strongest" Republican candidate to compete against President Joe Biden in 2024. "But can anybody beat Biden? McCarthy leads a narrow House Republican majority that includes sizeable factions loyal to the former president. Spokesmen for Trump and McCarthy did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the speaker's remarks. After the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, which led to Trump's second impeachment in the House, McCarthy initially said Trump bore some responsibility.

Trump and other Republicans slammed a plea deal that will reportedly keep Hunter Biden out of jail. Federal prosecutors announced a plea deal for the president's son on Tuesday. The corrupt Biden DOJ just cleared up hundreds of years of criminal liability by giving Hunter Biden a mere 'traffic ticket,'" Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth. Attorney General Merrick Garland previously testified that Weiss had the "full authority" to make the decision on whether to charge Hunter Biden. "These charges against Hunter Biden and sweetheart plea deal have no impact on the Oversight Committee's investigation."

While on "Fox & Friends," Suarez said that he was a "people person" who could connect with voters. In total, at least 78,000 people would gain access SNAP benefits per month, which is a .2% increase, the CBO wrote. Over weeks of fraught negotiations, many GOP members opposed additional public benefit spending, seeking to bolster the work requirements required to access some benefits. In February, the GOP House Budget Committee signaled that they wanted to limit public spending on SNAP. Through May, members of the America First caucus urged McCarthy to reject any deal that did not expand work requirements for public benefits. The bill raises the age for work requirements from 49 to 54.

As she made history in leading the agency, Khan's sprawling oversight plans and focus on fair competition in markets drew pushback from GOP leaders who denounced them as "politicized." The backlash to Khan's antitrust platform has come from across the Republican caucuses in Congress — even as many GOP lawmakers have backed antitrust policies or slammed Big Tech companies. watch nowKhan has defended her positions, telling CNBC on May 10 that the FTC enforces antitrust laws passed by Congress. Jordan and other GOP House members have criticized the plan as a "power grab." But an FTC spokesperson said Khan's agency has jurisdiction over all fees except banking and airlines.

President Biden and House Speaker McCarthy reached a debt ceiling agreement yesterday. The proposal must pass in the House, where some GOP members have said they won't support it. A group of Democrats has formed to help carry the bill if GOP members revolt, Politico reported. "We'll protect him if he does the right thing," Politico reported one of the House Democrats involved in the talks said. "I don't think McCarthy's the kind of guy who wants this to be his kind of legacy," Politico reported the representative said.
At least that's the thinking of a small but growing chorus of voices on Wall Street who outline the case for further stock market gains after both the S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite touched nine-month highs this past week. The VIX was trading around 16-17 late this week, signaling no great fear among professional traders. Walmart and other retailers this week highlighted consumers are spending less freely, but they're still spending , and that drives two thirds of the economy. Even Mark Haefele, chief investment officer at UBS Global Wealth Management, wrote late this week that he has to entertain what could go right in markets, despite the fact his own view is fundamentally bearish. If that "upside scenario" happens, UBS sees global stocks moving 13% higher by the end of December, and the S & P 500 surging another 6% — to north of 4,400.
Here’s what to know about the significance of the charges and what happens next:Three main buckets of chargesThe indictment lays out three main buckets of alleged criminal activity by Santos. The second set of accusations concern Santos’ allegedly false applications for unemployment benefits, resulting in a theft of public money count and two more wire fraud counts. To establish the alleged unemployment fraud scheme, investigators likely have the attestations Santos allegedly made to participate in the public benefits program. The House disclosure documents that Santos allegedly lied on are publicly available documents. There’s also the potential that, instead of a jury trial, Santos seeks a bench trial – i.e.
House Republicans want to strip billions of dollars in funding for energy projects as part of their debt ceiling bill. These latest changes are part of a last-minute effort by Republican leadership to get their members on board with a debt ceiling vote. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy insisted on Wednesday morning that the House will vote on the debt ceiling limit on Wednesday, despite several GOP House members publicly voicing their opposition to the legislation. In exchange, it would increase the debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion, or through March 31, 2024, whichever comes first. Whenever Republicans manage to pass their debt ceiling legislation, it'll be just a first step in negotiations with the White House, which is demanding to raise the limit without conditions.
Rep. George Santos insulted his potential Dem rival's chin during a heated Twitter exchange. The tweet backfired on Santos, who faced quick backlash and raised the profile of his opponent. "Corrective jaw surgery helped me breathe normally & saved my life," Josh Lafazan fired back. Lafazan, who lost his Democratic primary bid for the House seat in 2022, at one point wrote that he wouldn't need to lie to get elected, unlike Santos. "I'll be donating to Josh," wrote another.
Three GOP House members have cited low in-person attendance at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration headquarters in Washington. WASHINGTON—The Biden administration urged federal workers to return to their offices in new guidance that gives agencies broad discretion for how to revamp their work environments and leaves room for some continued telework. The policy is aimed at “substantially increasing in-person work,” said Jason Miller , the Deputy Director for Management at the Office of Management and Budget in an accompanying blog post. The 19-page memo Thursday set no concrete targets for how many federal workers must come back or by when, and it indicated officials would evaluate where remote work has been effective.
Republicans are finally reportedly ready to share their debt ceiling demands as a package. Their package would only raise the debt ceiling for a year, setting up another fight in the middle of the next election. The US is potentially mere months away from breaching the debt ceiling, meaning it'll be unable to pay for the spending that Congress has already authorized. Congress passed a clean debt ceiling raise three times under former President Donald Trump. "I'm very concerned about the debt ceiling," he said.
Republicans facing tough 2024 races are defending Donald Trump against criminal charges. Democrats are betting their defense of Trump will hurt them in competitive 2024 races. Former GOP House members are slamming Justice Clarence Thomas over his cozy relationship with a billionaire. One of Thomas' fellow conservatives says he "should not be allowed anywhere near a judicial decision." Because Justice Thomas knew it was wrong to accept these secret gifts." Another former Republican House member Adam Kinzinger tweeted "Regardless of your politics, this cannot be acceptable."
McCarthy’s Debt-Ceiling Offer

Joe Biden has been betting his debt-ceiling strategy on continued GOP House disunity—not a bad wager in light of initial Republican turmoil. But what does the White House do if Speaker Kevin McCarthy gets his team onside? Mr. McCarthy unveiled his debt-ceiling strategy this week, and the party looks to have found a landing spot. In a Tuesday letter to Mr. Biden, Mr. McCarthy notes the rapidly approaching “X” date for hitting the country’s borrowing limit and asks for a meeting. More notably, he unveils the GOP’s term sheet—laying out several spending reduction proposals as examples of what House Republicans might trade for a debt-ceiling hike.
GOP lawmakers published over 500 bills on different areas in which they want to cut spending. It comes as Biden has been urging Republicans to put forth a concrete budget. GOP budget chair Jodey Arrington said the budget could take months, and the primary focus should be raising the debt ceiling. Republican lawmakers just made their latest move in the ongoing drama to raise the debt ceiling and cut spending. Now, Republicans have some ideas — or rather, over 500 proposed bills for limiting funding to a slew of federal government programs and agencies.
A US House member said the US Trade Representative had "too nice a smile" to do her job. "I don't need your pity. "I don't need your pity. "You don't need his crocodile tears," she added. James Comer attributed Silicon Valley Bank's failure to its "woke" ESG investments. "This could be a trend and there are consequences for bad Democrat policy," Comer said on Sunday. Silicon Valley Bank's clients started running for the exits after the bank's management sold $21 billion worth of bonds at a $1.8 billion loss. It has become the biggest bank failure in the US since the 2008 financial crisis. Representatives for Comer and Silicon Valley Bank did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment sent outside regular business hours.
All the President’s Tax Increases

President Joe Biden speaks about his budget proposal for 2024 during a speech at a Northeast Philadelphia union hall on March 9. The press is reporting that President Biden’s 2024 budget proposal released Thursday would cut the deficit by $3 trillion over 10 years. The President’s $6.89 trillion proposal is a political document that sets up his re-election campaign. Its spending and tax proposals were rejected in the last Congress under Democratic majorities and have no chance of passing with a GOP House. But the budget shows where Mr. Biden wants to take the country if he wins a second term.
